The Rules and Attire

When Muslims go to the mosque to pray, they should be in a proper attire as there are some rules to obey:

-Cleanse yourself before you go in

-Your attire must cover your knee and elbow

-Your attire must be able to cover your hair as it is part of a beauty of you, and therefore, as not to forget to pray, women must cover their hair to hide their beauty.

-Lastly, but not least, everyone must be quiet to pray in the mosque.

An Abayah is somewhat like the Jalbaab. It covers the body from head to toe with one piece of material.

Burqah is usually made from black light weight, sometimes sheer, material that has two layers. This gives Muslim women the ability to expose her eyes if she needs to or to completely cover them when necessary.

Hijab is the large scarf that Muslim women use to cover their hair, forehead, ears, neck, and chest.

Jalbaab is the obligatory cloak that covers a Muslim woman's under attire. The jalaab is a commandment from Allah (SWT) as stated in the Quran: d Women cannot pray together.

Khimar is the scarf that looks like a cape. These large scarves drape down past the shoulders almost to the waist.

Niqab is a light weight veil that has elastic, a tie, velcro or a snap to fasten behind the head. They cover the face from the top of the nose to down past the neck line while leaving the eyes exposed.

My Reflections/Feelings

After going on the educational tour to Kampong Glam, I feel that Kampong Glam is very rich in its history. It actually is a place full of malays, and it goes back right to the past when Sultan Huessin Shah stayed in kampong Glam.

It is also quite a 'starting point' of Singapore, when Sir stamford raffles came to Singapore and established a new city. What I like about kampong Glam is that I actually have a true experience of going into a mosque, and seeing people pray. I also learnt a lot of rules: men and women cannot pray together, cleanse yourself before going into the mosque, etc.

I have also learnt about the good man, named Mohammad, who prays to only one god unlike other people. I have gained a lot of knowledge from this trip, and it actually let me enhance my heritage knowledge.

I hope I would have more chances of going to some more heritage tours!

How does that help...?

The area's name is derived from two Malay words, Kampong, meaning "village" or "settlement", and Glam (or Gelam) referring to a variety of eucalyptus which grew in the used to area. How Bible Came By...

Long ago, in a country named Saudi Arabia, there was a town called Mecca. There lived a very good man named Mohammad. Unlike other people, he only prays to one god andhe often go to caves to pray.
God saw this and sent an angel down to Mohammad. The angel said to Mohammad,"God sees you as a good man, god sent me down to you and I am angel of god.
Angel told Mohammad in how to lead a good life, example, not to take alcohol... and he told told his mother and uncle. They wrote all the things down and with that, it formed a bible.
The angel visited Mohammad for twenty-three years and of course, the bible was very long.

More On Kampong Glam

Here is why Sultan stayed in Kampong Glam...

Kong Bang is a musical instrument for celebrations. Koran, which is the meaning of bible,is placed on bookshelves, which is called rahar. Among the 3 traditional cities (kampong glam, China town, little India), which place is the most important?Of course, you would have guessed it. Kampong Glam. It is important as Sultan Huessin Shah lived there. Let's read on...

The first setters of Kampong Glam are, Arab, Bugis, Bonkinese and Jawanese.

Mango leaves are usually found hagging outside shops that are owned by Indian. This is to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck to the shop, to make business prosper.
The Holy land is Mekka and sarong kebaya are seen wearing on Singapore airline girls.

When you enter a temple, you must be clean and must wear proper clothes that covers your knees. Men and women are not allowed to pray together.

One day, Raffles arrived in Singapore and saw that Singapore was a good piece of land. Hence, he asked Sultan to let him buy the piece of land and the conditions are: Have a big piece of land, and he also requested for money. Loads of money. And with that,
Sultan moved to Kampong Glam...
For the malays, many people will be confused or mixed up by these three words: Islam,
malays and muslims. In fact, Malays is refering to the race, while Muslims are people around and their religion is Islam.

Sultan then wanted to build a mosque and a mosque is a place of worship. But before the mosque had finished building... Sultan passed away. So the first person to settle in the mosque is Sultan's second son.
